What's New for the 2019 Nissan Altima?

For 2019, the sixth generation Altima has added a new look, optional Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, Pro-Pilot Assist, touchscreen connectivity, more interior room, and more standard safety features. These major changes along with the new 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine makes this vehicle a top choice for those looking at the family four-door sedan market.

Five Trims with a Full Suite of Features

Trim levels are offered in five tiers, the base S model, SR, SV, SL and Platinum. The Intelligent AWD, with the ability to shift power between the front and rear wheels, is available on all trims equipped with the 2.5-liter engine. Additionally, all trims have keyless ignition, hands-free connectivity, and a USB-C port.

The large 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is also included with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The NissanConnectSM app suite allows some connectivity from Apple watch and Android wear devices. Couple these features with the optional Bose sound system and panoramic sunroof and you have a full suite of features that rivals any other mid-size sedan in the class. The new 2.0-liter turbo is available on the SR and Platinum trims and Pro-Pilot Assist features are standard on the SV, SL and Platinum trims.

Upgraded Engine Specs for Better Performance

2019 Nissan Altima RearThe exciting new 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine is rated for 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque on the SR and Platinum trims. The variable compression turbo-4 is rated to deliver near 6-cylinder performance with 4-cylinder fuel economy. The reliable 2.5-liter four-cylinder is standard on the remainder of the Altima line, but this powerhouse has also been amped up over the 2018 Altima engine to deliver a respectable 188 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque.

The revisions to the 2.5-liter engine also offer decreases in noise and vibration with heightened fuel economy and cleaner emissions. Nissan didn't stop with improvements in the powerplants of this line, they also updated suspension components, steering elements and installed more sophisticated rear shocks. All these changes add up to significant improvements in ride and handling. Add the updated continuously variable transmission (CVT), and you have a complete makeover to an already compelling vehicle.

Is the Nissan Altima a Safe Commuter?

2019 Nissan Altima Safety CameraThe commitment to safety shows with the 2019 Altima standard forward collision warnings, rearview camera and automatic emergency braking. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and active lane control. Grab the SV, SL or Platinum and you gain the ProPilot Assist Level-2 semi-autonomous driving technology. ProPilot Assist uses forward-facing cameras, radar and advanced sensors to help the car slow to a complete stop, start it moving again and stay within lane markings.

The "hands on" technology also includes rear collision braking when the car is in reverse, traffic sign recognition, pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert and automatic high beams. This whole system helps create a 360-degree safety shield which provides front, side and rear safety technologies. This whole system increases safety while acting to ease the driver workload of daily commuters under certain driving conditions.
