The Nissan Rogue is one of the bestselling crossovers on the market and one that Nissan has put a lot of muscle behind over the last few years. It’s no surprise then that the automaker is considering a hybrid version of the crossover to appeal to drivers who want the fuel efficiency and environmental benefits of a hybrid car.
“Automotive News” sat down with Nobusuke Toukura, the Rogue’s chief engineer, who said that the car company is already planning a possible Rogue hybrid in order to meet the U.S.’s increasing demand for hybrid cars over the next five years.
Nissan is currently in the process of launching a similar hybrid version of the Rogue in its native Japan. Called the X-Trail, the automaker looks to be testing the popularity of the hybrid in its native country before reaching out to larger markets like here in the U.S.
Japan’s X-Trail hybrid is said to cut nitrogen emission by over 75 percent, while the CUV's larger engine also offers more torque when compared to the Rogue’s gas model. Sales of the Rogue in the U.S. are up 28 perfect year over year, thanks to its comfortable interior, safety features and spunky powertrain. It will be interesting to see how a Rogue hybrid will do with North American drivers, as the U.S. continues to put increased restrictions on fuel emissions over the coming years.
