As the bestselling electric car in the world, the Nissan Leaf has always been on the forefront of green car technology. This model year, the hatchback is taking that tech one step further with a 30 kWh battery that allows the Leaf to go 107 miles on pure electric power alone.

"Since Nissan LEAF launched in December 2010, we've become the global leaders in electric vehicle (EV) sales with an all-electric car specifically designed for the mass market," said Andrew Speaker, director, Nissan Electric Vehicle (EV) Sales & Marketing. "We know that to maintain that leadership, we must continue developing battery technology that strikes that ideal balance between capacity, packaging, durability and affordability."

This new battery will come standard on the SV and SL models of the hatchback, while remaining an optional choice for other trims. It increases the Leaf’s driving range 27 percent for this latest model, cementing its place among the highest echelons of the hybrid/electric car market. The battery is paired with a 80kW AC synchronous motor that procures 170 horsepower and 187 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Leaf’s all-new battery pack isn’t the only interesting bit of new technology that Nissan has added to the car. The hatchback also gets a 5.0-inch color display screen, as well as mobile app-integration on its NissanConnect system.
